Tony Sio

Head of Regulatory Strategy and Innovation

Tony Sio is Head of Regulatory Strategy and Innovation at Nasdaq’s Anti-Financial Crime (AFC) division. Nasdaq AFC provides AML, Surveillance, and Anti-Fraud tools for regulators, exchanges, banks, and market participants globally. Tony defines the regulatory strategy for the division and ensures its service offerings are ahead of regulatory and technology trends.

Prior to this role, Tony was Head of Marketplace Regulatory Technology, where he was responsible for the Nasdaq Market Surveillance (SMARTS) solution, which is used by over 50 marketplaces and 17 regulators globally. His team leverages the latest technology to provide surveillance and regulatory solutions for all tradeable products in the world’s largest markets.

Tony brings over 20 years of experience implementing and advising on financial technology and surveillance practices for exchanges and regulators across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. He has led teams performing major technology changes at over a dozen marketplaces and has held lecturing and advisory roles at the intersection of regulatory practices and financial technology.

Tony has a background in financial market research with the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Center, where his work focused on market microstructure and market integrity. Tony brings together research and new technologies, such as machine learning, to develop novel approaches to protect traditional markets and, more recently, digital assets. He was also named to the CFTC Global Markes Advisory Committee’s Digital Assets Subcommittee. 

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Finance.
