Prof. Helen Cowie

Fellow of the British Psychological Society

Professor Helen Cowie is an Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Her career has been dedicated to promoting the emotional health and well‑being of children and young people, establishing her as a leading authority on bullying in schools, the home, the workplace, and online.

 

Her national and international initiatives address violence reduction and emotional support systems for youth. Her research spans peer support, school bullying, workplace bullying, cyberbullying and mental health, and she has published extensively in these areas.

 

Professor Cowie is the author and co‑author of numerous influential books, including From Birth to Sixteen, New Perspectives on Bullying, Managing Violence in Schools, and Bullying Among University Students, which are widely used in education, psychology and social‑care fields. She has also contributed to major texts on child development and emotional literacy.

Throughout her career, she has supported practitioners, educators and policymakers by translating research into practical strategies that foster safer, more compassionate learning environments. She is currently preparing a monograph, Bullying Across the Lifespan, with her co-author, Carrie-Anne Myers, for Springer.
