Mark Gem

Chair European CSD Association

Mark Gem is the chairperson of the European CSD Association, ECSDA and current chair of the World Federation of CSDs. He spent his early career with Barclays, before joining Clearstream (Cedel) in 1999 and has been a Board member since 2007. In his time with Clearstream, he has been in charge of a wide range of functions including risk management and compliance. As head of strategic planning, new issues, network management and core
securities product, Mark successfully expanded Clearstream’s sub-custody, common depository, CSD link and cash correspondent networks and the management of Clearstream’s interfaces with the issuance community and industry standards groups for both international and German domestic securities.

He currently chairs the Clearstream’s Risk Committee, amongst many other things overseeing the post-Brexit organisation of Clearstream’s UK business, Clearstream’s overall response to the COVID-19 crisis and the impact of the war in Ukraine. Mark represents Luxembourg on the boards of SWIFT.

He graduated from Oxford University with a first-class degree is Modern History.
